First impression: China's pretty cool. We got in last night, and these "dorms" are really more like hotels; room service, tv, dressers, closets, hot water in the morning. They're pretty nice. The smoking inside thing took a little getting used to, but it's easy enough to hold your breath going through the lobby. I died last night, yanked right off to sleep with hardly a thought (12 hours in the air, 36 hours lost in the plane; surprised?) I woke up pretty refreshed, though right now I'm just about dead again.
Which brings me to today. What a wonderful day it was :) We got up and met our host buddies and went with them to breakfast (which was held, perhaps ironically, at McDonald's). I got paired with Dani, a graduate arts student (I believe it was screenwriting...) who was very helpful in showing me around the campus. The campus is huge, by the way. It seems like everything's huge over here, or maybe I'm just surprised by the size of things because one typically thinks small and compact when one thinks of China... After the frigid tour of campus (we're on latitude with NYC), I went back to the dorm and relaxed for a while. Then the students all got together for lunch and then went with our buddies to Tiananmen Square. I'll let the pictures speak for this one. It was huge, much larger than most stuff stateside. Quite awesome indeed. From Tiananmen we went to this major shopping street and set up camp. Bought a few things before dinner (a dumpling dinner together with the buddies) and was dead by the time I fell asleep.
Just like right now. I'll add more tomorrow :D Check out the Flickr page for updates.
